Mark Zuckerberg’s Sister Is Now a Google Employee

In what may make for awkward family get-togethers, Mark Zuckerberg's sister, Arielle, is now a Google employee.

The younger Zuckerberg is presumably making the move as part of Google's acquisition of Wildfire Interactive, which was announced on Tuesday. Arielle's blog lists her occupation as junior product manager for the social media marketing firm. Arielle previously offered constructive criticism of her brother's company's site overhaul last fall.

Arielle's not the only Zuckerberg sibling in the business. Randi Zuckerberg, former director of marketing for Facebook, left the company last August to pursue other projects. Randi is an executive producer for Silicon Valley, a Brav…

Google Acquires Social Media Management Platform Wildfire

Google has acquired social media management platform Wildfire Interactive for an undisclosed amount, the tech giant announced Tuesday.

Wildfire, which launched four years ago by Victoria Ransom and Alain Chuard (pictured) was funded in part by Facebook, counts Amazon, Verizon Wireless, Virgin, Gilt Groupe and Spotify among its clients. It helps them manage their content, ads, promotions and more across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+ and Pinterest.

Wildfire is the latest in a string of acquisitions of B2B social media firms. In May, Oracle paid $300 million for Vitrue, a cloud-based firm that handles social media communications for McDonald's, American Express and Gillett…

Obama, Romney Campaigns Go Mobile With New Apps

President Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney have both launched new mobile apps for their respective presidential campaigns that were both made available for download Tuesday morning.

Though the apps were released on the same day, they have very different functionality.

Obama for America

Obama's app, named "Obama for America," is a full-fledged political organizing tool that lives on a user's phone. The app delivers news about the Obama campaign, lets supporters locate and sign up for nearby campaign events (such as voter registration drives), allows users an easy way to donate to the campaign and includes a "Get Out the Vote" section featuring information about each s…

Finally, a look at the people who use Twitter

The days of “I don’t get Twitter” may soon pass. Tweets are now a form of self-expression among connected consumers and it is this connected generation that continues to grow in size and influence year over year. Much in the same way that TXTing is a natural form of common conversation, even if it’s a norm that’s outside of the world as you know it—Twitter is reflective of how millions of people are connecting and communicating.

Over the years, Twitter has become a human seismograph measuring world events, popular culture, everyday sentiment, while providing a lens into every nuance that captivates our attention. What was once a Twitter paradox is now part of our digital culture. Everyday people who are connected to Twitter become the  nodes and their shared experiences form one of the most efficient information networks in the world.

At the end of 2011, we learned that over 100 million people were active on Twitter and that top top three counties, U.S., Brazil and Japan alone accounted for over 175 million daily Tweets.

But to what extent is Twitter serving as an extension of real world self-expression? How has Twitter truly permeated our society? To answer these questions and more, Pew released a new internet study focused solely on Twitter.

Twitter is literally soaring. Adoption among internet users more than doubled between November 2010 and February 2012. Now more that 20% of all people in the U.S. who use the internet also Tweet or at least roam the Twitterverse. Additionally, 8% of all U.S. internet users are active on Twitter every day.

Pew’s study also explored who uses Twitter to give us a better idea of the people behind the Tweets.

As you can see, Twitter usage according to Pew is almost even among men and women, with women edging slightly ahead. Just over one quarter (26%) of internet users ages 18-29 use Twitter. Most notably, those 18-29  represents nearly double the usage rate for those ages 30-49. Pew also found that among the youngest internet users, those ages 18-24, 31% are active Twitter users.

Pew learned that black internet users continue to use Twitter at remarkably high rates. More than one quarter of online African-Americans (28%) use Twitter with 13% doing so on a typical day. Hispanic users ranked as the second most active race on Twitter at 14%. Interestingly, residents of urban and suburban areas are far more likely to use Twitter than those in rural America.

Pew discovered that Twitter use among those 18-24 year old increased dramatically between May 2011 and February 2012, both overall and on an everyday basis. Usage among slightly older adults, those between the age of25-34, also doubled—from 5% in May 2011 to 11% in February 2012.

Generation-C  is not bound by age, but by connectedness. Either in or within grasp, Twitter users and those who use smart phones are eventually becoming one. As of this survey, Pew discovered that one in five smartphone owners (20%) are Twitter users, with 13% using the service on a typical day.

Millennials are born with digital DNA and smart phones are a physical extension of their being. 18-24 are not only the fastest growing group of Twitter adopters over the last year, they also represent the largest increase in smartphone usage of any demographic group over the same time period.

Additionally, mobile users between 18-24 are more likely than older generations of cell owners to use Twitter. One in five 18-24 year old cell owners (22%) use Twitter on their phones, and 15% do so on a typical day. Following true to typical internet usage, African Americans and Latinos also stand out as heavy mobile Twitter users. Pew also noted that these two demographic groups have high rates of smartphone ownership.

As Twitter becomes part of our digital  lifestyle, we become increasingly elusive. Twitter is a reflection of our society and what captivates online and offline. With everything we share, we contribute to a searchable human index that forms a repository of collective experiences and expressions. We are both patrons of Twitter as well as its architects and librarians. We can learn anything and everything we wish about today’s connected consumer, but everything begins with the desire to learn. Once we do, Twitter’s role in our digital society will help us learn how behavior is evolving. And for those who choose to not just listen, but also analyze Tweets, demographics and psychographics, the ability to compete for relevance will be a proactive rather than a reactive venture.

Build Your New Website To Compete With The Big Boys

Websites that have been established for a while always have the advantage over a new website when it comes to ranking with Google. Google tends to trust websites that have been around longer, and these websites have had more time to build good back links, which can make them difficult to compete with. Fortunately there are ways to compete with good Automotive SEO techniques, if you happen to have a brand new website.

Start by making sure you are targeting the right keywords. It can be very difficult to rank well for competitive keywords if you have a new site. Don’t give up on these popular keywords of course you should include them on your pages and in your strategy, but you should also target some less popular ones that your competitors aren’t using. For example if your competitor was ranking for the keyword Honda Cars Massachusetts you might want to optimize one of your pages for Honda Cars Boston Massachusetts. This keyword may not get nearly as many searches as the broader keyword your competitor is ranked for but it’s much better to be #1 with a less popular keyword than on the third page for a popular one.

Spread out as much as possible. Make as many pages targeting as many secondary search terms as you can. Once you start getting higher ranking for some of the longer keyword phrases your site will start to become relevant to a topic in Googles eyes. The more you build your sites reputation as an authority on that topic the easier it will get to go after those competitive keywords. Also remember that people who search for longer keyword strings are usually people who are further down the sales funnel and might be ready to buy very soon.

Once again we come back to the issue of content. This whole exercise is futile if your customer gets to one of your landing pages and immediately clicks away. Make sure you are offering something useful to those who would click on your listing in Google. Create pages that solve a problem or provide the answer to the question that the keyword or search phrase asks. Getting your new site to the top of Google doesn’t have to be hard if you use the right strategy. You just have to work on building your reputation with Google by using good content to optimize for a wide range of somewhat less important search terms.

Original article about SEO for new websites was posted on Wikimotive’s blog under the title How To Establish Your New Website In Search.

What Facebook Reveals About Olympics Fans [INFOGRAPHIC]

Olympics fans like sports. But what do they Like? Facebook -- who else? -- holds many interesting insights there.

Social media advertising company Compass Labs recently analyzed Facebook fans of the official Olympic Games and U.S. Olympic Team pages to compile some revealing profiles of how the two groups match up. And don't worry about a small sample size -- combined, the two pages have about 5.7 million fans. Compass Labs cross-referenced Likers' other favorited Facebook pages to find which sports, movies, brands and TV shows rate highest with each group.

Overall, the two pages corral similar demographics. Both the U.S. team and the Olympics at large have fan bases that are about 55…
